Our shop Inside Museum Africa is open Monday to Friday 9am-4pm.
Our beautiful shop inside Museum Africa is a permanent showcase of the handmade products created by students, graduates and facilitators of Imbali. Since its launch in 2007, the shop has gone from strength to strength, selling exciting and unusual gifts, homeware, textiles and funky jewellery. A large percentage of the selling price goes directly to the maker, providing them with some income and marking the start of a self-sustaining career. Imbali also supplies the Origins Centre at WITS and the Johannesburg Art Gallery Shop with our products.
Our unusual black and white ceramic ware is highly sought after. Our bright and colourful textiles – hand painted, batiked, screen and block printed, and woven – have developed into a signature style. Our detailed embroideries and appliqués on cushions, clothes and quilts are often snapped up as soon they appear. The range is ever-changing, as we adapt and innovate with the changing times and seasons. The unexpectedness, beauty and charm of the products result from a combination of the unique vision of each individual crafter, their inventiveness in the use of colours and patterns and their ability to re-think conventions in design – all combined with a rigorous insistence on quality craftsmanship.
The shop is open Monday-Friday 9am to 4:00pm and is located inside Museum Africa, 121 Lilian Ngoyi St, Newtown, Johannesburg.
